For the love of teens...
Before I picked up a camera and before I was a mom I was a teacher. The younger the student the better. Preschool was my jam. The sense of wonder among the littles filled me with so much joy. Most things could be fixed with some kind words, patience and maybe a snack. During that time in my life I was teen adverse; I didn’t understand them. Now that my oldest two are teens I find myself surrounded by them and filled with compassion that I was once lacking. Each day as I drive to pick up my teens from school I mentally brace myself for what’s going to enter through the car door. The ride home often becomes a 15 minute therapy session. I know from talking to other teen moms I’m not alone. The teenage years are such a complex time; filled with doubt, discovery, confusion, big emotions, constant expectations…the list is endless. Cliche or not; these seem to be especially hard times to be a teen.
I never expected the joy and fulfillment I would receive from photographing high school seniors. Taking the opportunity to slow down and spend time with seniors as they are about to launch into the next phase of life is a gift. I enjoy connecting with them, hearing their accomplishments and plans for the future. Delivering photos that capture one’s personality and all of God’s beauty is a privilege. Imagery is powerful. Senior sessions are not just pictures; pictures you can take with your phone. Senior sessions are a moment to slow down and reflect on the journey and anticipate what’s to come.
